5 Winter Treks to Explore from November 2026 to March 2027
Winter changes the mountains. Forest trails grow quiet, meadows may turn white with snow, and clear days can bring wonderful views of the Himalayan peaks. If you’re planning a winter trek in Uttarakhand, here are five routes to consider—from shorter walks to longer high-altitude journeys.
Snowfall and trail conditions vary each season, so check current conditions and your trek operator’s itinerary before you book.
1. Brahmatal Trek
- Trekking distance: Around 21.5 km
- Total duration: About 6 days, including travel
- Difficulty: Moderate
Brahmatal is a classic choice for a winter mountain experience. The trail passes through forests and open ridges, with views of Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti. Its high-altitude lakes and snowy scenery make it especially appealing in winter.
Why choose it? For the combination of winter landscapes, mountain views and a rewarding multi-day trek.
2. Kuari Pass Trek
- Trekking distance: Around 22 km
- Total duration: About 6 days
- Difficulty: Moderate
Also known as the Lord Curzon Trail, Kuari Pass crosses forests, meadows and high viewpoints. On clear days, the route offers striking views of peaks including Nanda Devi and Dronagiri. It’s a good option for trekkers looking for a longer, more varied winter route.
Why choose it? For big mountain views and a satisfying mix of terrain across several days.
3. Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek
- Trekking distance: Around 30 km
- Total duration: About 6 days, including travel
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate; prepare for long climbs
Ali and Bedni are vast alpine meadows with views of Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti. In winter, snow can transform the forests and open slopes. This is a longer trek with significant uphill walking, and snowfall can change trail conditions.
Why choose it? For expansive meadow landscapes and a quieter winter trek. It can suit beginners with good preparation, but don’t choose it just because the grade says “easy to moderate.”
4. Tungnath–Chandrashila via Chopta
- Trekking distance: Roughly 9 km return from Chopta to Chandrashila via Tungnath
- Total duration: Around 1–2 trekking days; longer itineraries may include travel or Deoriatal
- Difficulty: Moderate; snow can make the upper section more demanding
This route climbs from Chopta to Tungnath and continues towards Chandrashila. The shorter walking itinerary makes it appealing for a winter getaway, while the high point and possible snow still call for suitable footwear, preparation and local guidance. Uttarakhand Tourism describes the broader Chopta–Chandrashila itinerary as easy to moderate.
Why choose it? For a shorter mountain break with a temple visit, snowy trails and rewarding summit views when conditions allow.
5. Dayara Bugyal Trek
- Trekking distance: Around 21 km
- Total duration: About 4 days on the route
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Dayara Bugyal is known for its broad meadows and open Himalayan views. In winter, the landscape may be covered in snow, making it a beautiful choice for trekkers who want a meadow experience. The route still includes uphill walking, so a little preparation goes a long way.
Why choose it? For wide-open scenery, a manageable multi-day itinerary and a memorable first experience of winter trekking.
